What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a state of mind, enhanced by physical & mental relaxation, in which our subconscious is able to communicate with our conscious mind.

The conscious mind can only remember around 7 things at the very same time, whereas the subconscious mind is incredible, working at many, many things at once like keeping our bodies going by working our heart, lungs, pumping our blood round our body, and so on. So, it is this incredible subconscious mind that we address during hypnotherapy, so that it can store the information we give it and act on it without relying on our conscious mind at all! Everything that has ever happened to you in your entire life is stored in your subconscious mind, so if we need to go back & find out something, your subconscious would take you back to that time/event, if we needed to do so.

Nobody can hypnotise anybody that does not want to be hypnotised, you need to be willing for it to happen. Once you are in a state of hypnosis, also known as deep state of relaxation, or hypnotic trance, it allows a hypnotherapist to present direct suggestions to the subconscious mind for beneficial change, such as controlling negative feelings, eliminating phobias, controlling unwanted behaviours or habits.

What to expect from hypnosis

All that is required is that you listen to my voice & follow my instructions; your eyelids will close down & you will drift into hypnosis guided by my voice. Once in hypnosis, you will still be alert and aware of your surroundings, you will hear sounds as usual, you will not be “out of it” you will just be in a wonderful state of deep relaxation. You are perfectly able to bring yourself out of this state if you so wish, but it really is such a lovely feeling that it is rare that people want to do that. This is good as it ensures that you are in control at all times. So once in hypnosis, you are still able to move & talk, and at some points I will more than likely ask you questions.

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) combines cognitive behavioural and humanistic therapies with hypnotherapy. It works on the theory that life experiences, from birth onwards, programme the way you see the world.

I can help you to discover how you have learnt to think or feel so that you can take control of your actions. Together, we will also look at your successes, so you can use these to develop further successful skills and behaviours

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a comprehensive psychotherapy that helps you process and recover from past experiences that are affecting your mental health and wellbeing.

It involves using side to side eye movements combined with talk therapy in a specific and structured format.

EMDR helps you process the negative images, emotions, beliefs and body sensations associated with traumatic memories that seem to be stuck.

These can contribute to a range of mental health problems.

EMDR helps you to see things from a different perspective and relieves the symptoms that you were suffering.

Whether you're looking to improve your competition performance, overcome a fear of riding, or simply boost your confidence in the saddle, I can help.

Some of the ways that hypnotherapy can help us equestrians are:

  • Relaxation and tension release techniques to ensure that our horses do not pick up tension or anxiety from us;

  • Increase confidence, so that our horses are reassured by us;

  • Change the bad habits that may be creeping into our riding position (I personally used hypnotherapy to help me keep my left heel down when applying my left leg);

  • To banish our competition nerves;

  • To focus us on what we need to do to get the best competition results;

I offer a specific “weight reduction/improve your riding” package, which many riders find beneficial when preparing for the new season or for a specific competition.

I also travel to many competitions, using the comfortable living area in my horsebox as a mobile therapy room (pictured below), to help banish competition nerves and anxiety and ensure that you are in the best possible place mentally to perform at your best.

If you're ready to take your riding to the next level, contact me today to schedule a consultation and take the first step towards realising your equestrian dreams.
